I think it goes back to your obsessive compulsive observation. He is so quirky he feels he has to do it each time or he won't play as well. He seems to have gotten it in his mind that, like the way he positions his water bottles in front of his chair on the sidelines, he must go through this routine each and every time or, like Sampson without his hair, he will lose his abilities.
